Colin Steed Artist & Tutor. Hi Fiona. I love your soft stile. Before you start any painting think about tone values. My idea for this one is a dark blue sky, light buildings and grass near the buildings and darker foreground. This would give sunlight to the buildings. Try not to use Payne's grey when mixing colours and use no more than two to three colours in your mixes. This should keep your painting looking fresh. Having painted this subject six times I think It may be a good idea to have another attempt after you have read my Painting Project 2. You have a stile that needs to be developed so keep at it and make lot's of pencil drawings as well.

Fiona Savage sent in her version of Colin's project saying: 'I had 6 attempts at this one and am still not happy with it. My earlier attempts began with the focus on the timber beams in strong black, which just swamped the picture. Later attempts began by mapping out a first pale wash to separate the colours of the different aspects of the non-timbered buildings. For the beams I used a diluted Payne's grey with a tiny touch of blue so the timbers didn't overwhelm the picture as they had in my earlier efforts. I still don't know the logical order in which to tackle the strong and weaker colour features of this type of picture'
