As regards the background, did you see this weeks Sky Arts landscape artist programme, where one lady started with a black canvas?! It worked quite well, and when you think about it, why not? I usually colour my boards slightly before painting, takes away that awful blank white scary surface before you start! I can see you doing more of these!

Thankyou Tessa . I did watch it, yes I thought that was a good idea especially when using oils or acrylics, not to mention the pallet knife, my favourite choice,, my problems are that I've been painting in watercolours still finding them unpredictable. Think I need to get back to my favourite....

You've done a lovely job with Marley, the background is fine as it shows up the white of his fur. Well done.

Thankyou Margaret, I have tried water glazing the background but it's just soften the background a little..

A neighbor's rescue dog, he is so cute, I am not good with portraits, my neighbor dared me to have a go.. I must admit I'm really pleased I did. Again it is a struggle with that white on white..and I don't think I got the background colour right..any suggestions?A4 bockingford watercolour paper in water colours
