They let him die
Watercolour. These are some holy men I met when I was on holiday in the Balkans with my girlfriend Danita (it means Morning Star). They told me that the mermaid was waving furiously at the holy men and begging them to rescue her merman who was out of his depth and in serious trouble. The holy men told me that they began to pray but it was useless and the merman sank to the bottom. The mermaid soon found another partner but she never forgave the holy men for their inaction. In mitigation the holy men said they had no talk time left on their mobile 'phone so couldn't ring the coastguard. I thought it was a lame excuse, especially for holy men.
