Started en plein air and completed in the studio (O.K., just at home!).Mixed media = pastel and charcoal. Tourettes is near to Vence, and I'd recommend a visit, if you are in the area. It's a bastide town with steep walls, narrow cobbled alleys etc., and it's not very touristy. My revised aim in painting is not to capture a photographic likeness, but to capture the essence of a place with plenty of light and colour. These days I tend to sketch in soft charcoal. It rubs off easily, and can be used for shading, including with some pastel colour on top. My skies in particular are rapidly executed in order to capture the fleeting moment. With much further working the clouds start to look solid, so I leave the sketch, with just perhaps a few little touches only added.
