Don't know the legend Kate, but I certainly love the painting.

Thankyou for the lovely comments Adele, in short, the legend is that King Lir's second wife hated her step children so cast a spell on them turning them into swans to spend nine hundred years on three different seas, the last one being the Sea of Moyle between the North of Antrim and Scotland.

Thanks Kate - following on from your explanation, I looked it up and was pleased to learn that the wicked Stepmama came to a very sticky end! Justice rules!!
