Much better to have a painting like this than a highly detailed, over-carefully drawn out image, I think - so much detail is suggested that it leaves the eye with some work to do, and it just works better, because it's the way we see the world. You could take the bottom half of this picture, and still have a good painting, because of the well-chosen palette and those flicks, presumably with the rigger, which add interest and life.
