My late partner did watercolour and lived in Brixham he did a watercolour similar to yours you will find it on here under Maxwell Lennox. I think you have painted this well

Lovely painting - glad the foreground boats are left white as I think it makes for a good contrast between the busy background.

This is painted in an interesting style. I have been exploring leaving sections of my pen and wash paintings unpainted. I don't know about you, but I find the decision about what to paint and what to leave unpainted very tricky as it is all about the balance of the painting and making sure the eye travels where you want it to go. I think this one works well, but I feel that one of the boats should have had some colour on it and would have picked the third one from the left. Without this to attract the eye, the danger is that the viewer looks straight to the background houses and misses the boats. The other danger with large unpainted sections is that it can look unfinished rather than artistically planned. However, you may be more experienced with this style than me, so you have your decision making sorted out. I have a way to go with it!

Thank you all for looking at my work..I'm so amazed as I only uploaded these yesterday!!! Maxwell: thank you -I will certainly go off and have a look Joseph -thanks -at least you 'got' what I intended, unlike some who merely say 'it's not finished'! Thea. You are so right about that fine line...I never plan what not to colour..it just seems to happen, and isn;t it the truth..you never know what to leave out, but you certainly know when you've done too much? It's a style I have long admired, and am still trying to fine tune...I have lots of work in this vein, and in fact, it was this style -clean crisp line work with minimal colour -that caught the eye of a gallery owner and led to me being asked to show work there!! Taking your comment about colour on the boats..I re-visited the painting last night, before I read your comment, and did in fact add some colour to them!!! great minds? Thank you again for looking, and commenting -much appreciated John

Are you going to post the revised version?
