I selected a section of a local OS map that looked interesing. Onto this I painted a skyline with watercolours using roads or trackways to make an interesting shape. I used watercolour to give me the transparency I needed so that you could still see the map details underneath. I then found earthworks like tumuli and ancient droveways or roman roads and marked them onto the map .Where there were woodlands or copses I painted on little groups of trees and gave them shadows. This made the painting look three dimensional even thopugh it was on a 2D map. It amazing how much you find when you really look at a map even when you think you know the area well!
