Lovely pastel work Jane, you should have posted the watercolour version as well for comparison, i guess you will always be able to get a deeper tone into the shadows with pastel than with watercolour, but would be interesting to see how the other turned out, love the colours in the different levels of the background here

I do agree; it has worked out very well. I can feel myself standing in front of the trees in the dark. Very good.

I always find watercolour hit and miss - if it works, it works; miss the point by just a little bit, and it fails. So maybe try it again? Like the pastel version - although can't make any useful technical comment since I can't paint in pastel for toffee..........

Thank you - the reason I didn't post the original watercolour is that the shadows of the trees on the snow didn't look like trees. I should have put the picture upside down (as I did with this one) and I would have seen it in time. At least I recognised my mistake and obviously have managed to rectify it well. Thank you for your comments. I may have another go with my watercolours now that I know where I went wrong..... who knows?!!

I'm currently finding that I prefer grey linen to white canvas board with oils .... What medium you use and the supports you use makes a huge difference to the affect you get. Your duck is a good example. You had the image and idea, but had to wait for the right material. Time for coffee.

Did this in watercolour first time around but wasn't completely happy. This time more pleased as tree shadows look more like they should. Hope you agree!!!
