Well Malcolm, this is very good for a first attempt. I had a similar experience with my first attempt, wondering if I could manage this "difficult" medium. Correct paper and perseverance is the answer. I felt that I did improve each time I used them but still got a long way to go. Don't give up, you have talent!!!

Thank you Michael. The first paper I tried was too smooth. The paper I used for this has more 'tooth' and takes soft pastel much better. The problems I had were in covering the under colour with a clean top colour and in getting a clean white.

First attempt at an animal in pastels. Pastels an 'easier' medium to work in? I am not convinced. I think that my technique requires significant improvement :-)
