Hull's Lost Trawlers by Gary Austin

Hull's Lost Trawlers

This would look good hanging up in the galley of the article ranger on the river hull.

Remember it well although I was at junior school at the time. The Kingston Peridot was one of the other two and I cannot recall the third. There was one survivor from the three trawlers a Harry ? who was mate on one of them, and went back to sea two or three weeks later as it was 'all I know'. They iced up and rolled over. I had one trip to northern waters some years later and my mother didn't sleep for the three weeks I was away even though it was summer and no icing dangers...some big seas though!

A great tribute to those brave men Gary, it's a wonderful painting.

Acrylic on Canvas 16x12". January 2017 is the 49th aniversary of the loss of 3 Hull trawlers within 3 weeks. 58 men lost their lives with just one survivor. This painting is my memorial to the 58. All 3 ships were lost in the arctic fishing grounds in heavy weather. The Ross Cleveland (Boat H.61) was lost within half a mile of another Hull boat, hence the inset image of a trawlerman looking on. I have use just two colours in this painting, Blue Black Indigo and white.
