Chinatown again

This is another beautiful painting. I love it, great composition and colours, well done

I've never been to Singapore, but this seems quite an open street scene compared with so many other far Eastern street scenes I've seen. I love the colour, life, and incidental detail.

Two beautiful paintings about Singapore. My husband and I were there from 2000 through 2007. It is a beautiful city state. Indeed, it has changed. The chinatown we saw looked very different from your paintings.

Fred, this is really beautiful! I love the light in this one and your color palette, which is much more cheerful and bright than the many street scenes painted by our local artists. And again, the atmosphere is superb - it really captures the hustle and bustle of the street. Robert, we generally have no more open street scenes worth painting - at least that's what many of the artists who painted these scenes will tell you! It's all been tidied up and the houses have either been pulled down or given a makeover. Fred, you're overdue for another visit! It's changed again since 1997.

Thank you Seok.Don't they have listed buildings in Singapore, or preservation orders, it is such a shame. I'll try and do a couple of more paintings from 1956. As for visiting, I don't think we can take that long flight again!

We do have listed and preserved buildings, Fred, but they've been spruced up, and many of the artists here find the charm not so much in the freshly painted buildings but the old walls and half fallen shuttered windows! Personally, never having lived through that period, I am not nostaligic about it and never felt an urge to paint it. We have beautiful trees and gardens that are finally maturing and I thought that made good artistic fodder, though many would disagree. As for the flight, yes, unfortunately we are no nearer than 50 years ago! Thanks for sharing your paintings, though. Apart from being lovely art, It's interesting to see how tourists viewed Singapore in those days.

This one's for you Seok. Thank you for your observations and I did take a photo of women working on a building site. I just couldn't believe it. Went back to Singapore in1997 and was amazed at the transformation. Although it's completely modernised I still love Singapore.

Born In South London now living in Hampshire. A self taught artist although I did attend evening classes at The City and Guilds of London School of Art. As they didn't teach painting in artificial light I had to be content with life drawing two evenings a week. I also did all day on Sundays but…
