You've really captured the atmosphere here, Fred, and I really love the colors. I don't remember any of this, as most of it disappeared before or when I was still a very young child in Singapore, but my art teacher painted a lot of scenes similar to this one and your painting is really very reminiscent of that era. The ladies who worked in construction (the one in your painting with the red headcloth) have now virtually become a very rare breed, if not extinct. Most of them are now in their 80s and 90s, if they are still around, and no one is allowed to set up shop by the roadside anymore, so this is a scene really frozen in time and so very well depicted!

This is a lovely colourful painting conjuring up past times in Singapore I expect it's rather different now! So interesting to read Seok's comment.

Very interesting Seok and what a wondeful scene Fred and so well done.

Beautiful, lively scene, Fred. I agree with Seok: very atmospheric.

Thank you all for your kind comments.People keep telling me Singapore is boring, well if you don't like spotless streets, crime free, an underground system that puts most hospital hygene to shame. stay away. But I love the place.

Great atmospheric scene. Seen similar ladies and scenes in older parts of Hong Kong/Islands and region 1981-4. Found Singapore in 1984 amazing and even relaxing after HK ! Well done.

I was in Malaya doing my National Service, mainly in the jungles of Johore, but we did have some time in Singapore. I bought my first camera there and I took my self off for the day exploring Chinatown and taking photos. This is from one of them.
