Little bridge by J. Fiona Savage

Hi Fiona. You have a quite distinctive style and I enjoy looking at your paintings. I wonder if I may make an observation, (even though I cannot paint in watercolours)? I think your work might be enhanced if you used a little more variation in tonal values. In particular, you need some extra darks. Looking at the distant mountains, they are darker than the foreground which brings them forward and flattens out the picture. Lighten the mountains and introduce some darker parts into the middle and foreground. For example, make the underside of the bridge darker as well as the banks of the river. Just my view, you understand. You may disagree. Anyway, keep posting!

Hi Lionel. Many thanks for your comments and constructive criticism. I have made another attempt at the picture, but got carried away with colour rather than tonal variation and it looks a bit lurid!. I think I shall try again using a limited palette, which should help me concentrate on tones.

That's good news, Fiona. I'm glad you accepted my comments in the spirit in which they were meant - constructive. I look forward to seeing your next posting.

2084 x 1472 This was based on a picture in an instructional watercolour painting book. I liked the peaceful atmosphere of the scene.
