Really interesting and helpful Dennis

Thank you Heather very much

Thanks for the helpful tips, Dennis - I agree that it's very hard to know when to stop with a painting!

Thank you Jan very much appreciate your comments thank you

I love this thank you, I always do too much detail with scenes like this, and it's so good to see how you pick things out, and get rid of details that dont matter. I need to pay attention to this more.

Very instructive Dennis, I find it so easy to copy every detail in a photo, like the platform and details on the tight in this scene. That's why I enjoy sketching outdoors, you automatically paint what interests you.

Thank you Stephen, yes close copying is not too difficult because it requires very little or no creative process , interpreting in an artistic way is way harder but gets much better results when it comes off. It can be done in many ways outdoor painting is one way , but studio Painting is just as valid each to there own . Me personally I'm only interested in the finished painting not where it was done. If it's a picture I like I don't care how it's done. Thank you very much for your comments mate much appreciated.

Nice work Dennis, an interesting process..

This little sketch is to show how I do it. First step for me is to visualise the Painting, then make sure I have a strong focal point. The focal point here is the white tree and two prominent figures. Keep the background loose not much detail otherwise you lose the focal point in the background details.the dark figures in the middle ground break up the horizon line where the buildings meet the ground. Use counterpoint when placing your Figures so light against dark and dark figures against light. As soon as the Painting becomes pleasing to the eye stop don't over detail it , it doesn't work as I know to my cost it's a difficult decision to know exactly when to stop. Hope it's helpful to some painter , happy Painting to all.
