Lovely shadows Deborah, I have thought once or twice about having a go with pastels, they look fun to use.

I think you are doing great if you have only been doing it for that short time. A bit of advice, try drawing and painting as much as possible from things you have seen, sketched or photographed. If you become too reliant on photographs or copying stuff the harder it will be to get away from that later. The best time to get into the habit of not painting from 2D works is right at the start.. Hope you dont mind my twopence worth, look forward to seeing more of your Pastel work.

Thanks for the comments/advice. I did enjoy doing the pastel drawing, the immediacy of it and the ease of correcting mistakes. Will definitely continue with this media, whilst trying to get to grips with watercolour as well. I've done quite a few courses over the last two years, which did involve drawing/sketching/mixed media from life, still life and on location, so have made a promise to myself this year to concentrate on putting it all into practice and get out more in my lunch breaks during the week to do more location sketching (when the weather is a little warmer) and still life's indoors when its not.

My 2nd attempt at pastel. The idea came from a Christmas card but I added shadows to give it definite feel of the sun setting. I started drawing 2 years ago now using pencil/charcoal and wanted to try other media, such as watercolour and now pastel. I'm enjoying myself very much, no matter how good or bad the result.

I attended a course back in 2010 on Renaissance Rome and part of the course was to visit the Raphael Cartoons at the V&A. Walking through the Sculpture Court at the V&A I noticed many sketchers drawing from the sculptures and they looked so at peace. I remembered enjoying art at school, many years…
