How do you work on sanpaper and emery cloth, doesn't it wear out the pastels and your fingernails?

Thanks for you comments guys. Yes Fred & it hurts like heck if you havent done any for a while but the "tooth" holds a lot more pigment than other papers and allows for a much richer finished painting
