What a lovely snap shot in time, people enjoying a day by the sea side and as usual no smiling :) Ah, I remember the scene very well. One thing, where's the, kiss-me -quick, hat. Well worth the wait, chris , to see such a plethora of vibrant colours. Smashing work.

Excellent work Chris. I can remember the sand in the sandwiches! Oh, and my dad with his knotted hankie on his head. Those were the days!

Wonderful work and also memories like the others and for me too.

Thank you for your compliments on my work. I am from Blackpool so I to have an emotional attachment to the place. I have lots of photo reference on the town and it's characters of the past which could be used to as reference for great paintings. Hopefully I will be able to complete the next one in less than 12 years!

Amazing work Chris - so much to see and study.

Thank you everyone for compliments on this piece, I think it works on a few levels, firstly it is well constucted and painted but possibly more importantly is the subject matter. It conjures up memories of seaside holidays of distant summers and story's of ones own youth. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, I need to dig out that book again and look for more inspiration! The Editor of Leisure Painter has just emailed me and siad "The Icecream Van" was selected as the favourite painting of the month and will be in July's edition of the magazine. I am so pleased.

Just beautiful, right up my street.

I was rather taken by a book of wonderful photographs depicting Blackpool in the 1960's and 70's taken the legendary Alf Gregory, who was Hillary's official photographer on the 1953 expedition to Everest. His black and white photograph depicting a group of holiday makers forming an orderly queue on the beach for icecream inspired me to use the image as inspiration for a painting. Instead of working in monotone, I decided that I wanted to use brilliantly bright colour, to help conjure up the nostalgia of balmy summers of days gone by. I only finished it this week, around 12 years after I began. You can't rush these things!
