The Dreaded Pansies

This is the first painting you've posted that I think hasn't quite come off - I think the shadow IS too purple, and for once I think the composition doesn't quite work, in that I can't see that cropping the painting would help much.... Well this is a first for me! I've never had the nerve to criticize you before, but then I wouldn't have done it this time if your standards weren't so extremely high.

My immediate reaction was - that is lovely. I love the pansies and the shadow.

Perhaps ?! the shadow is a bit long but the colours are so lovely and the flowers delicate - I like it anyway.

I like the colours on the background wall so wouldn't crop it. I think the pansies are beautiful.

I love it, especialy the colours and the shadow, pansies are beautiful, purple looks great.

I yield to the majority! Perhaps I'm just not keen on flower studies..... and incidentally, I do agree that the pansies are beautifully done, as is the foliage beneath and around them. I do see and agree with all the others have said, while still thinking that this lacks the expressive freedom of the majority of your other works. You set the bar very high, that's the trouble!

Hi the first painting that really took my eye after scrolling through the gallery page after page. I like it very much,

I have a long way to go when it comes to flowers. I just came back from the greenhouse and took some pics to practice on. Many thanks to all for your encouraging comments and constructive notes. A special thanks to Robert for seeing the light. LOL :-D

I don't think this is stiff at all. The bucket is magic. I also think the purple shadow is spot on because you have used a lot of the complimentary oranges and yellows. I like the sense of light in the greenery in the centre of the bunch of flowers - so easy to get that dark and oppressive, but you have done well there. Background is beautiful. Lovely painting.

My attempt at flowers. It's so stiff it looks brittle. Another workshop assignment. Shadow too purple?
