I think it works well, you were asking about background...for what it's worth, I'd say don't add a background. Maybe put a vague shadow under the horse, I often do this with my figures to 'ground' them, as you say. Tricky drawing with that foreshortening. Excellent.

Super tonal values Carolyn. Love the plait. It’s fine as it is but a few blades of shadowy grass may help.

My God Daughter in winning form. Sanguine and white conte pastel on dark beige tinted pastel paper which served well as the mid tones. Painted from an original photo taken by her dad. I chose these colours as the horse is chestnut. I'm not sure about a background but think it mght need a bit of something to ground the horse. Any ideas?
