I'm not 100% sure I've grasped what you're asking for here - your plan, so far as I understand it, looks sound enough - if there is considerable variation in colour and tone in the works you show, it's going to look discordant however you show it, because it will be seen as a whole, a theme.  If that's disrupted, people are likely to blink and back away - because we all try, hard though we might strive to avoid it, to see patterns and to expect them.
