Years ago, last century in fact, I managed to blag my way into a legendary American car scrapyard in Barnsley of all places. Woolhouses had been there for decades and had cars from the 20s to the 80s in it - amazing stuff! I've meant to paint some of my pics for years but haven't got round to it. At long last, I started a few weeks ago - here's where I'm at: I'm quite pleased so far, other than the Camaro on the top of the pile is a bit flat. I'll return to that once I've finished the lower two-thirds of the painting and add some detail to wake it up a bit. Anth.
It's going to be a great painting Anth, I always think your work is wonderful, so lifelike.
Thank you both :) Going to try and get some progress this week while I'm in the mood!
Super subject and looking forward to the final piece.
Not my style but an interesting composition and it has all the makings of a good painting.
Cheers ;)
I really like this one Anth. As for the rust holes I like them as they are providing a great contrast of tones against the pale bodywork. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
Cracking mate. Two things (three actually) I want to ask as curious. What medium is this? Do you use tracedown? What is the surface?
Thanks all! Syd, I don't think the camera (or photoshop) is doing me any favours here, the rusty areas aren't as dark on the actual work as they appear. I've used a fair amount of Cad Red and Yellow Ochre over a raw umber base to brighten things up. Also, funnily enough, this is the third painting where I've used a minimal amount of black, as I'm trying to use either Payne's Grey or a mix of that and Raw Umber instead these days. AGHolder, the answers are: • Oils; • Yes; and • Canvas board. I use stretched canvases for large work but tend to paint on board for the little 'uns.
It doesn't look flat to me, but I would play about with a digital version with subtle changes to the colours of the paintwork, just for fun
Visited a local art group this afternoon and it fired me up for the first time in weeks - here's today's progress: I think that the red wheel may be a little much but I'll work the image in around it and see how it sits before I do anything with it.
Got some progress last week when I had a gap at work - the Carmaro now has brakes and a bumper and the Skylark has more rust! I hope to finish this one soon as I have a portrait commission to start sharpish!
