this is the second time I have put a WIP on POL the first I must say I had some comments most of which helped . this time I will need some help please I am getting very confused with painting the petals of this flower. I had thought of cutting a piece of card with a hole to place over the petal next to be painted. we shall see whether it works but if anyone has a better suggestion please let me know. I am pulling my hair out at the moment and I am fed up with A, losing my hair and B. it hurts LOL.. .
Won't comment in any detail this evening, 'cause I'm off to bed: but just to be clear - you're using watercolour here rather than acrylic? Because that makes a bit of difference.
I don't really know much about painting petals, or why you would be thinking about using card... one would imagine you can work from the general to the more specific though and since yellow is easily covered by orange you could block the whole shape in yellow then use orange to define the forms a little more after. It looks like you have done quite a detailed under drawing though, and if you can draw it surely you can paint it? Maybe a greater explanation of the difficulty you are experiencing would clarify?
The Sunflower you are painting looks lovely, Tao, but your obviously not happy with the progress. The only thing I can suggest is ( but not on the painting you have posted ) to paint in all the petals and then darken the ones you want to bring forward or send back, this I find difficult to explain, but here is one I did in watercolour a few years ago, it was growing in the headland of a field so I took a photo in various positions and did this, hope this helps, tao. That's a lovely vibrant flower, Sylvia.

Don't think I can improve on all that! But yes - start with pale colour and strengthen it; add a touch of violet to your yellow to achieve shadow (you could also just add a darker yellow for shadow), even put a darker line on the edge of some petals to delineate them. Achieving freedom with the brush takes practice: the Chinese hold their brushes in a particular way, as you'll know - or you can hold the brush farther away from the ferrule: and always have paint that is strongly pigmented, but very fluid. Easy! Ho ho ho....
You're NOT sorry! It's a fib..... Now just to get this quite clear: the point about FB groups, SOME FB groups, is that their members invariably praise whatever work is posted on them, in very similar terms wholly irrespective of the quality of the work - that is not the case here, because this isn't Facebook nor do people praise work indiscriminately. Such unvarying praise is useless other than in providing a boost, justified or not (and in many of these cases usually not) to the self-confidence of the artist - that this can be a bad idea is obvious when you remember that those outside the little group of chums are highly unlikely to be so readily impressed. And I suspect the praise is dished out insincerely in order to gain a similar degree of praise in return. And again - I do not suggest this happens on this site, because we aren't all gluttons for glutinous praise. That does not mean that Sylv's praise of Tao is either useless or excessive. Indeed, it's quite appropriate. But then Sylv wouldn't say it was lovely if it wasn't, and there lies the difference. If you like, I shall embroider this on a sampler (you are not to even think of taking me up on that).
I can't offer much advice but I can sympathise with you on the confusion. The pic is looking good. D
I've done a few sunflowers but fancy doing another now.
WIP STAGE 2 I have taken on board all the help and ideas from you all thank you very much. I have now covered the petals in an undercoat and also the leaves which certainly gives the flower a foundation to work on.. I really dont know why I decided to do one petal at a time. I have never done that before. I think the idea was to make me slow down and be more careful (well the heat makes us all do crazy things doesn't it? LOL) it is lovely to see all the sunflowers that have been painted.... a few more would be great . this time I will try and remember to post the painting :P
'remember to post a painting' we've all done that, Tao, I'm sure :) This is coming along nicely, I can see you are looking for shapes within shapes to give it life. You're doing a great job, Tao.
I agree that this sunflower is coming along very nicely and will look forward to seeing the finished work. Incidentally Carol "looking for shapes within shapes" is what I do with some of my abstracts, start with large shapes and refine as I go along (and then change things!)
Thank you all for your suggestions and I did take your advice this is the sunflower WIP stage 2
