A view across the river. I've wanted to do this for ages but haven't dared. Today's the day! Oil on a natural canvas, love it. This is what's behind the branches of the trees which I haven't painted in yet and won't until I've got the tones right. Can't wait to put highlights in but must have patience.

Some think about tones consciously, some have long since stopped doing so but it's all there, just the same: they don't need to think about them any more. I don't think I consider them much in any very conscious way either, unless things aren't quite working out - and that's nearly always the reason, if it's not faulty composition: the tones aren't right. Looking forward to seeing how this one develops - and you never really know, do you?

Well, obviously you COULD darken those topmost leaves - but I'm really reluctant to offer advice on that, because I think you've finished it, or have come so near to finishing it that tweaks may just complicate the image and you'll lose that pastel feel you've achieved. But it's so obvious that you have a good eye, and know what you're doing, that in your place I'd leave it for a couple of days, not look at it at all, and then come back and see what you can see - if your brain is anything like mine, it needs a day or two to process this sort of information and allow me to see the picture as a whole rather than in parts that may in themselves need fettling. It's amazing what you can just leave alone, imperfect though it may be, because the eye just doesn't travel there but homes in on the focal point. The brain fills in places that are just indicated by a few brush strokes - it's very useful like that, and saves us all a good deal of work.......
