I thought I would have a go at a still life - not my usual genre. but where do I go from here? Crop it? Work on the folds in the table cloth? suggestions please.....
Not sure anyone can tell you what to do next. Just keep on looking and keep on painting. Don’t we all work differently whether it’s landscape, portrait or still life ? . I don’t think there is any prescribed method. But it’s looking good so just keep on doing what you are doing.
Thanks Sylvia and Alan. I'm concerned with the lack of interest and detail on left side, so cropping on the left and bottom, seems the best way to go. A little colour in the middle of the oranges is a good idea and I still have the label on the bottle which offers several opportunities. It will be a few days before i have time to continue, but I will post it again, when I have made progress.
Just a thought here, Hedgehog. Maybe cool the background surface a touch to bring the still life forward, and taking that much off the painting takes away the lead-in for the viewer, and yes, I agree with you, more folds in the tablecloth to make it more material like, which in turn could also lead the eye. A wonderful painting.
Progress has been made or maybe a few steps back. I'm having trouble with the lettering. Definitely a rum do!
Well its probably too late now for this one but for future use i think the background is the wrong cour for thw composition. It makes the oranges look palid and insipid. There's no contrast. Maybe the glass could have some.of that dark rum in it too. And the lettering is quite good I think. I love the shadows and reflections...all very well.done. David
I might agree with you David, but the project was to create a harmonious painting, centred on one colour - only varying to the secondary colours. In this case it centres on Orange, but includes yellow and red. Perhaps I should painted in a skull and cross bones instead of the letters.
