Sorting through things I came across this which I started about 3/4years ago and lost impetus. It's collage and acrylic on wood. I rather fancy finishing it, it needs something in the big space, my intention had been a gondola coming down the canal...any brilliant ideas?
What about a moored gondola on the same side as the others but further up or is that too much traffic Marjorie
I can't think what else you can put there other than a gondola, maybe a gondola full of flowers, or people dressed up and in wonderful masks, or the One Cornetto guy.
The last time I was in Venice I happened to see a painting of a submarine periscope coming up in Plaza St. Marco - food for thought !! Donna
A pair of swimmers.....Ugh no.
How about leaving the space in the water but joining the two sides (buildings) with telephone/electric wires, colourful smalls on a washing line etc. It's the top 'space' that seems to need something rather than the water. Or maybe a couple of the colourful mooring posts along the right hand side? Sorry Marjorie probably not very helpful suggestions.
Thought the shark idea was pretty decent and then I thought of my hubby's classic answer to my dot-to-dot pictures I'm addicted to and that is "it's a hippo"! One day it will be and the last laugh will be on him. All pretty decent ideas Marjorie - you just have to pick one now.
I think Kay's suggestion is quite good Marjorie, because anything too big will compromise the buildings, which to me are the focal points, and also because those flowers on the balconies would, naturally be shedding some petals which will break up the expanse of water. So no pressure for you! Perhaps too much advice??
I suspect that by the time you've strengthened the buildings and tidied up the perspective, it'll be much easier to judge what, if anything, to put in or on the water - you could of course go for a glare of light, reflecting in the walls rather than go for all these sharks, hippos and subs that people are suggesting.... Although you could always put a gondola in with Silvio Berlosconi having a bunga-bunga party on it.... or a Donald Trump, preferably going down for the third time.... Well, it makes as much sense as a hippo! Your problem is one I've all too often encountered - painted a picture, then realized there's nothing much to form a focal point so cast around for something to put in which I should have put in to start with. I think the clothes lines you see crossing the water in Venice might be an idea, as suggested, and power lines; maybe a bird or two on the water? You don't want to clutter it, but something to connect the sides would probably help. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
What about developing the reflections and waves. In the Venice canals, where the sun isn't shining directly on the watt is dark green. There reflections are often better than the built themselves, with those golden, ochre and burnt sienna colours.
