I took some snaps so you can see how I construct my portrait sketches. It is painted in oil paint on oil paper, this one Strathmore. I've been experimenting with a few different types of oil paper, this is ok, it has a texture a bit like lines which is what I paint on normally.
Wanting to keep the sketchy feel, I've used a big flat brush for as long as possible, part laziness and part not wanting to get hooked into details. In the last stage I introduced a palette knife just to help blend in some of the brush strokes.
