Now taking on an acrylic - this (which may be a touch difficult to work out at first - it's certainly a touch difficult to paint it) is a view from a flat in which I lived until ca. 1992; and which I rather wish I'd never left, since lots of things went wrong after that .....
Anyway, ignoring all that: the house stands on a hill overlooking the Isle of Wight town of Ryde (our biggest, but not the island's capital); I photographed and drew a sketch of the view from my window - and have only now got round to using it. This will be quite a small painting, 10" by 8", and I anticipate having a problem or two since it's not my usual subject at all. I'm NOT going to try showing every house and building - that's what cameras are for; but I hope to get something presentable out of it, and if I don't, gulp - you will know.

Let's see how this one goes before expanding it - although as it happens there will be more rooftops, over the road from those which were right in front of me. I'll see if I can squeeze that black cat you're so fond of in too........ the rat's going to be a bit of a problem this time...... decisions, decisions....

Umph. Wish I hadn't started this - Derek was right, it needed a wider scope, and that meant I should have chosen a much bigger board than 8" by 10" - the eyesight isn't up to it and I'm struggling.
Still it may be useful for others to see the mess we can get into, if nothing else. It's NOT finished, not by a long way - perspective is all over the place, and that's the least of its problems. Glad I'm doing it in acrylic rather than oil ....... ? I don't know ..... I'd probably take more time (because I'd have to) and expend more thought if it were oil; and had it been a watercolour at least I'd have avoided trying detail from the outset....
I'm at the stage where I'd really like to find that one master-stroke which would transform the thing, but actually - it's just going to take a lot of WORK, and backache, and eyestrain, and a certain amount of foul language....

Couldn't sleep so worked on it overnight - will post when it's light enough to take a decent photograph. The cat has come back to life; the seagull still a possibility..... but I'm not seeing anywhere to put my rat....
I think I may need to change the title to Trumpton or Camberwick Green, to be quite honest - but let me tantalize you no further; let us await the POSSIBLY final unveiling....

Okeydoke - this is the latest version: foreground simplified, puddy tat incorporated on fence, discordant white highlights toned down..... while this isn't the final version, it'll be somewhere near to this; it's looking a bit pinky and toytown at the minute, and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do much about that given the scale I set myself. Some obvious changes needed, including reducing the bulk and impact of the tower in the distance, which looks big enough to be the Tower of London transported, and the spire (which in reality is miles away from it). I may also change the colour of one of those house walls, to break down the candyfloss look the thing is approaching.
Incidental details may also follow, but unless I make a very fundamental change to this, I think it's the end of the WIP stage, and anything further is going to be tightening up, refining (I hope..) etc - if I reach a stage at which I can live with it, I'll bung it on the Gallery.
