I took this photo of Exmoor years ago....I don’t even own the camera that took it now. However I’ve decided to paint it. I don’t normally prepare a lot of the stuff I paint, it’s normally in the moment. And I don’t normally paint landscapes, but this is my beloved Devon. So I sketched it.... Bear with me....I’m getting there. Ive been following ‘Journey into Abstraction’ by Linda Birch, featured in Leisure Painter February issue. I followed her instructions and copied the shapes I saw onto tracing paper, then transferred them onto my Acrylic paper in readiness for paint. I’m breaking the habit of a lifetime and preparing a painting. I’m going to give it my best shot and see if I can get a realistic abstract that resembles a landscape. I believe it’s the only way for me to paint one. Ellen
Go for it Ellen . Bright colours would be my choice and it requires a bit of planning methinks.....Syd
The photo is right up my street!! Where is it please?!! I agree with Syd, chunks of bright colour would be amazing - pinks greens and some naples yellow for good measure!!
Great sketch Ellen, and coincidentally I'm working on developing abstracts which have some landscape elements. Looking forward to seeing your finished result. I shall have to do some sketching and planning before my session this morning (8.25am here), Syd's and Georgina's colour suggestions helpful too.
I agree with Ellen about Devon. I like the panoramic view of the photograph - it really gives a sense of space. When visiting north Devon, don't forget Clovelly for harbour and the steep cobbled streets. On Exmoor you should be able to see some Angus cattle, I bet they look good in the snow!
Syd, are you thinking Francis Boag with your advice here? Looked him up after seeing yours on the Gallery, really like his work.
Thanks Syd, still thinking about my next one, could have field shapes in bright colours perhaps.
