Hi folks, Hoping for some critique and advice on this pastel painting. Wondering if it looks a bit dull. Would you brighten it and if so how? I was thinking of glazing over it, but not sure what colour to use or leave as if. Any advice gratrefully received. Thanks, Dawn
To me it looks a bit dull yes, but some canal bridges are dull and shady. Perhaps highlights on the water...yiu have some but theyre grey rather than sunny . Maybe some light brick work and some brighter lighter greener leaves in those trees. A brigjt sky behind perhaps. I guess Im heading towards more contrast. Thats what I think...but what I KNOW and tuppence wouldnt buy you your next crayon! Its a good picture though. D
It is quite dark - so probably yes, add a few lighter patches and a touch of highlight, just to show where the sun gets through. I quite like dark paintings, in both senses of the word, but this isn't going to catch the eye as it stands - and as we paint to be noticed, I suppose (do we? Sometimes I wonder....) the viewer needs to be attracted to look in the first place. I'm not a pastellist, so don't know just what I'd do here other than add a few crisp touches, reflect some light in the water, and clarify the perspective on the bridge a bit: it has mass, which is good, but is it my eyesight playing tricks (as it does) or is the arch of the bridge not a perfect curve?
MUCH better: well done.
Looks great now Dawn.
A great improvement.
Really like your last version with the contrast Dawn.
