Hi there, I thought I would put myself out there and show you the painting i am working on at the moment. The story behind it is that it is for a charity auction to raise money for Bloodwise which is a charity focussed on beating blood cancer and leukaemia. I am only just getting back into painting after a long break hence the 'grid' (which i know is frowned upon), I've been working on it on and off for a few days, it's in acrylic (with lots of quick 'finger blending' - not sure if that's how it's supposed to be done) here are some progress pics. The reference image is a black and white photo with heavy shadow and strong highlights.

What's the connection? I don't look at either the reference photo or the portrait and think "Bloodwise charity"
Sorry, I should have explained, the person in the photo is a member of the band One Direction. His mum passed away from leukaemia in January. Someone I know asked me to paint the photo of him to auction amongst the fans to raise money in honour of his mum.
I do love a portrait... and this is looking good... crack on!
Looking good so far and there are no rules about squaring up, been done for hundreds of years.
I hate to say this, but do you have permission to copy the photograph? Someone has copyright to this photograph and it is illegal to copy it and claim it as your own image, let alone sell it. So please get written permission. Best of luck with your endeavour. My sister's husband died from milo-fibrosis (growth of fibres in the bone marrow) and consequently leukaemia when his bone marrow could not produce enough haemoglobin. So I am very sympathetic to your cause.
It is worth checking it out as I do with every celebrity type I paint...all been ok barr one who agreed them changed his mind after I'd done the painting.. My copyright so blah to him. Just be sure, even though I'd guess Louis would be cool if he knew the charity. His agent will the best port of call.
I certainly hope you get clearance to progress with the portrait as it's looking really good. As for the grid, don't worry about that, as Derek says it's been used for donkeys years by great artists. good luck for the auction.
Thanks Margaret, I've just sent the email so we'll see what happens. I've been painting this morning anyway, here's where I am up to so far. Not sure why i've left the features to last! (well i do know, it's because i am scared of doing them!) Lucy
The grid issue isn't a problem - I don't know who frowns upon it, but so far as I'm concerned they can take their frown somewhere else; the method has been a standby for portrait painters for, as Derek said, centuries. On the copyright question, we're in stickier mud - the copyright lies with the photographer, not with the young man himself or his agent; it would help if he were happy for you to use his image, but obviously he didn't take the shot: probably an agency did, with which One Direction's agent, or the specific performer's, will be in contact. Stress the cause, as I'm sure you have, and they will all probably cooperate to help - but be aware it might take a while. I wish you luck - I had a good friend and colleague who died of leukaemia; it's an exhausting and cruel disease.
Thanks Robert (and Derek) on the grid point, I think it's a hangover from what I was told by my a-level art teacher (surprised I can remember that far back!) good to know that it's an accepted method. In terms of the photo, it was taken by his mother as opposed to a professional photographer, so hopefully he/his agent will be able to give consent. And I completely agree with you, I am not expecting to hear back quickly at all. It's very sad how many people are effected by this horrible disease. The bands fans sometimes get painted badly by the media, but since she passed away they have raised nearly £30,000 for the charity through various means.
It's looking good Lucy.
