This is my latest WIP, it is the first time I've ever tried fur. Got a very long way to go, but it's starting to take shape

Thanks Adam, I've done very few acrylics and tend to shy away from them...so this will be of interest to me. I've never tried markers (had to look them up), they look interesting, too.
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

I can't think of any reason why the brush-markers would be incompatible with acrylic - if that's any reassurance.... although I should be the first to admit that I don't know everything! Acrylic works on almost anything, provided there's no oil, wax, grease in it, and the surface isn't shiny (though it will even stick to shiny surfaces if they're rigid, and not subsequently exposed to strains or handling). My own way with fur, for what it's worth, seems to be close to Adam's but minus the markers - getting the broad shapes down, without detail; ensuring that they fit the body contours beneath; then going in with the detail, normally using a selection of pointed brushes, from large to small, or occasionally even coloured pencil (which can work very well over acrylic), conté crayon, or Indian/pigment ink. I have known people who could paint fur in one simple coat, but I regret that I am not to be counted among their number.

Beautiful dog Sylvia, and wonderful portrait. I have a small selection of acrylic markers which I use very occasionally for tidying up lines. I also sign (when I do sign, I don't usually when the painting is just going to sit around for a while and then get packed away) with a very fine marker, not great on fine detail with a brush.
