I'm struggling with this - I don't know what to do next. This is not a real iris. I've used the bottom of one and put it with the top half of another (using 2 reference photos). So the background is a real problem, with nothing to work from other than my imagination. Do I need a bud well? or field full of irises? or draw a line around all the leaves as per Van Gogh? Any thongs would be gratefully received.

I agree with A G - I think you've finished it. OK, press me harder (I'm not proud.....) and I might suggest just a few darker touches to delineate those background leaves and stems. But as it is, it's a striking painting, and I think congratulations are due.

I didn't mean "thongs", by the way - this predictive is really unpredictable. Please read "thoughts", but I think you have got the gist. Thanks for all your kind words. Dark bits it is then. This is my first flower painting in oils. In fact I have not painted many flowers all, but I thought they might go down well as Xmas presents.
