I'm always interested in the 'work in progress' posts, appreciating the fact that some people are prepared to post in this way...so I thought I'd offer this. I'm always in my sketchbooks 'doodling', often I like to turn them into 'pictures' rather than doodles. This started that way...I began drawing the face bottom left...I like drawing wrinkly faces (with the aid of my shaving mirror, I have constant source material)...originally it was going to be just a page of sketches. But I thought I'd make it into a picture with a surreal touch, which means I can do whatever I like. I thought I'd make some nod towards composition by having another large face at the bottom right...I hope you can make out my rough pencil sketch. Although this composition will be of the 'fill the page' variety. The intention is to draw in pen and ink, and then lay colour washes over it. I'm doing it in my large sketchbook, which has quite good quality paper and will stand a degree of waterpaint. I treat these pictures in a kind of 'leave and revisit' way. I'm still not sure what I'm going to fill in the gaps with...but something will pop up. (I've just decided to paint a landscape...something I've never done...at least, not where the SUBJECT is the landscape, so this 'doodle' picture will go on the backburner.) I realize this type of picture may not be to everyone's taste, but as we're all in the business of making pictures, I hope it might be of interest. I will post again, as it progresses. Lew
It's not to my tastes and yet I love it ... so maybe I don't know what my tastes are!? Can really appreciated the work involved not to mention the IMAGINATION required(!) Look forward to seeing more!
Lewis l love to see sketchbook work, it can be very insightful, and show the creativity an artist has to offer. I say don’t look too upload the perfected painting, the sketches behind a finished work gives wonderful insight. What I see here is brilliant brain storming, thanks.
I've started other things, but one advantage of having a picture like this on the go, is that I can revisit my sketchbook picture whilst the other paintings are drying. I've finished the drawing side...at least as far as I'm going for now. It's a bit weird, a touch surreal, but fun to do. The next thing is to start laying on colour washes.
Thank you, Tao, for your comments. You are correct in saying my doodles are just a series of drawings, joined up in some way. Whilst looking at art on the net, I came across a lot of art that was labelled 'doodles.' It wasn't what I had thought of as doodles, and as with most art, some of it I liked and some I didn't. My doodles are really sketches, studies, call them what you will...but I found it fun to fill in the gaps and join them. Often they begin with one drawing, the difference between them and my normal pictures, is that I don't have a preconceived idea of the end result...they evolve. I'm interested in surrealism so that allows me to add odd stuff, it's fun to do this, making things up as you go along. I've posted one of my earlier pictures in this style (if you can call it a style). This began with the girl's face (centre left)...I sketched it from a reference photo...so I had one face drawn on a large sheet of paper...I filled the rest in, making things up, mostly surreal. It was enjoyable, which is the only reason I draw and paint. I like pictures you can look into and discover things. It won't be to everyone's taste...but that goes for most art.
I haven't got far with this piece, I've been having a stab at landscape painting, and other family matters have curbed my painting and drawing somewhat. I've begun to lay in some colour washes. I think the yellow frame (that will be checkered) seems to be tying it all together, and I'm hoping that adding colour will make sense of the drawing. I'm at the stage I seem to get to with all my pictures...the 'this isn't working out' stage...finishing it will decide that one way or the other.
Man, I don't know what you're smoking to generate that level of inspiration, but d'ya wanna send some of it over here?
Thanks Syd. Old Bosch is a favourite, so the smallest glimmer...an atom, of comparison is most welcome. Lew.
Brilliant Doodling Lew.
wow!! I love it!!
Well, here it is finished...at least as far as I'm going to go with it. I can't say it didn't turn out as well as I expected, because when I started I didn't have a finished image in mind. I like bits of it, but I think it was better as a black and white drawing. Maybe I've gone a bit ga-ga with the colours - I like bright colours. But it's OK, not the best of my doodle style pictures. Underneath, I've shown a grayscale version of the finished picture...slightly better, I think.
I like the colour version, my favourite section being the feline. Good work :)
