A few years ago, I went to a commemoration of the Sabbath Fight (one of the last battles of the English Civil War), at Freedom Fields in Plymouth. My photos of the event have been idling in my computer ever since. Prompted by the theme of "the Event" at my Tuesday Art Class, I found some of the most interesting faces and put them together in a rough composition.

I started painting today, in 6 shades of grey. (6, because that's the number of compartments in my mince pie baking tin, that I use as a palette. But I can still use pure white and black. After a couple of hours, I had to stop as it was too hot in the conservatory and my paint was drying too fast, despite the retarder. I'm hoping to get some more painting in tomorrow, and start glazing on Tuesday in class.

I haven't read it myself - I didn't think that I would enjoy that sort of coercive abuse and bullying. I've known people that do go in for S,M &B. But not for me.
I've seen demos on You Tube using 9 shades of grey, but 6 shades plus black and white give me 8 which is enough for me. Anyway, buy the time I have mixed up a few batches, it is bound to be different, particularly using acrylics, with the colour shift. Here's hoping anyway. Too hot to paint today though.

I ran out of patience and started on the colour glazes before I finished the grey stages. I found that the colour glazes on the faces made the flesh tones too dark and I had to add extra white. But the skin tones are nowhere were right yet - not pink enough. In all it seems to be a quick and efficient way to paint. A painting this size would normally take 3 full days for me, but so far, I have spent 2 hours on drawing, 4 hours on greyscale and 2 hours on colour. Still a way to go, but I don't expect to spend 2 full days on it. Not sure what to do about the flag. The one he was holding had a St Georg's cross in the top corner and a white phoenix on a black background for the rest. While the guy on the left had a Red cross at the top with a plain yellowish colour for the rest. the black one will make it all a bit dark.
By the way the grey has been done with acrylic and the colour glazes in in oils. Comments and suggests are welcome.
