On the background issue, you asked for suggestions. Your dog is the centre of interest and fills most of the canvass, maybe no really defined background would be best. Something like Sylvia's used in her elephant picture, or this image I found on the net. (Don't know who the artist is.)

Well I don't think we are war with nature but I do think our ethical choices have shown that we regard all nature as second to H sap. We regard ourselves as outside of the rest of creation and thus spare no thoughts for the needs of others, be they tiger, elephants or deep sea squids. This has always led me to feel that the optimum number of humans in earth is nil. But that leaves me with a few questions, one of which is...who then would Labradors love??? D

I can't answer that David but I do really like your painting of your dog. As Lewis said, I wouldn't put too much colour on the background as it may take away the beauty of the dog.
