Hi All, Inspired by an item in the latest Leisure Painter I decided to have a go at an Art Nouveau style painting, utilising a photo I was lucky to capture whilst in Yorkshire in September. Here is the source photo:  I liked the composition pretty-much as it is, so only made minimal changes; I rotated the butterfly 180 degrees so it's facing into, rather than out of, the painting, and I removed the bits of basket at the bottom and just continued the wall instead. Here is my outline drawing: and here is my layout plan for the colour, scribbled roughly with coloured pencil.  I was originally intending to use Ecoline watercolour pens for the final version, but unfortunately the colours we have are not suitable (greens far too unnatural) so I will be using watercolour paint instead. I'm quite chuffed with how it's turned out so far, and really looking forward to completing the final painting. :-) Sarah

I like the bright colours and would suggest that the butterfly should be the brightest to stand out.  This would make a really good stained glass window.
Thanks Steve, I'll try that.
If you look art nouveau images they often contain a circle and curving shapes intertwined with the subject. The butterfly on the flowers could be encased with a circle and the plant leaves swirling around, under and over it. I can see that you've already done the drawing, but just a suggestion.
Thanks so much for your input Frank. As you mentioned, I have already done the drawing on this occasion, and indeed I was only aiming for the vague style of Art Nouveau. However, what you said is really interesting and, since I have basically fallen in love with the style and plan to explore it further, I will keep your suggestion in mind for future work (and indeed may do another piece based on this photo, incorporating your suggestions). It's also made me curious and I'll now be seeking out more information and examples for further inspiration.
