I was asked to pop a WIP of one of my acrylic ink abstracts on the forum so here it is. This is the first stage - first I wetted the board (I use standard mount board) with a fine mist spray and then, using a pipette, dropped some acrylic ink into it. The mount board measures 10ins by 10ins which is a bit small but should work out okay - said he with fingers crossed - if it doesn't I'll look a bit f a chump but heigh ho! Next I spayed the ink with more water to spread it over the surface and provide a background - the mount is now sopping wet so I'll leave it until tomorrow to dry.
Thanks Michael, looking forward to seeing how it develops!
Off out to paint the next stage - I think I will be aiming at a fairly busy abstract along the lines of Amanifest which I recently posted in the gallery - I'm using the same basic colours but as it will be busy I might add some white to give it punch - I'll see how it goes. Perhaps I'll call this one Amanifest 2 unless anyone's got a better idea. I use an Atelier spray bottle but ideally I'd like something that has an even finer spray. Old perfume bottles would be ideal but all my wife's old ones seem to have fixed lids which can't be removed - perhaps I should have a word with the manufacturers!
I've never used inks so I'm really interested in seeing how your going about this and how it turns out.
I hope you find the progression of this piece interesting Patricia. I am sure you are aware but it's worth making the point that I use the inks in quite a different way to most with plenty of water and the use of watercolour mediums - a quite different approach is needed if you are painting more representational work.
Thanks Syd I'll give it a try
For the next stage I added some watercolour granulation fluid to the ink which I then dropped onto the surface - quite runny. I have tried several different mediums including iridescent and modelling mediums as well as crackling fluid but granulation seems the best although, as it's not very thick, it does mean the ink is actually diluted - bit like adding more water. In fact you can see some bubbles in the photo. For the next stage I used the spray to spread the ink across the board. Granulation fluid effect not yet apparent but should become so as it dries. The reflection in the photo is from the camera flash reflecting on the wet board. By the way I mop up the water from around the edges of the board - it's okay on the surface but can penetrate under the cut edges and cause it to buckle if you don't keep it reasonably free of the puddle effect! Now all dripping wet again so last stage tomorrow.

Going well Michael. So will I thanks Syd.
Out all day today but will finish it off tonight.
Next stage - I painted across the image with gum Arabic which also helps to encourage that graining/marbling effect and dropped more colour on top of it (including some white which I felt was called for) which I then manipulated across the board with a fine spray held at various angles depending on what I was trying to achieve. Again you can see the bubbles on the surface. Last stage. This is the exciting stage when it all begins to come together. While still damp I've dropped more colour with a bit of spray here and a bit of spray there, and with a watercolour brush I've encouraged the paint to go in various directions. With a rigger I've dragged colours into others to encourage veining. I've just taken this last photo while the painting is still a bit damp and hence a few reflections from the cameras flash. Not one of the best but hope you like it anyway and at least it gives an idea of how I go about it all.
I use mount board - a local framer gives away all their off-cuts for a donation to a charity - they have a collection box in their premises. It's better than Christmas when I call in - loads of off-cuts in a variety of colours and many are quite large pieces or in colours for which there is no call.
