How do you assess tone in your paintings? The common understanding is to have light, medium and dark passages and many are advised to prepare a ten point 'grey scale' or buy a commercial one. Being a Bridge player I find my playing card scale easier to use. The low spot cards (2-5) are the lightest tones, the middle spot cards (6-10) the middle tones, and honours the darks. So for my lightest passage (usually in the sky) I think 2, for the middle tone I think 8, and for the darkest marks (usually the final calligraphy) I think Ace. If you want something darker just move up a card. What are the tricks others use?
