Hi Martha, Why would you want to spoil your paintings with a watermark? I know there are several artists who employ this method hoping that it will make it more difficult to copy. However that can be achieved by a high compression rate which all picture processing software can provide. If you scale the photo of your painting down to say 800x600 pixels and employ a low resolution to compress the file size to below 100k rather than megabites people will not be able to produce prints from your work and it will still look good on the screen.

I've never bothered with this - I just take bad photos! Seems to work - or perhaps no one wants to copy my stuff....
You can add a watermark in various applications, including Picassa, which is a free download (though do watch out what you might be downloading with it: I nearly ended up with Norton antivirus when I had to download it again, which I do NOT want). I think you can also do it in Open Office and LibreOffice, but I've not tried to.
