I have just spent a week on a watercolour painting holiday..
The tutor used charcoal in a very heavy handed way to do the drawing. Even the mountains etc were outlined heavily and while his paintings are really attractive, I did not like the effect on my paintings at all, and as I have always thought one of the first rules in watercolours was to keep the colours clean I was horrified at some of the really dirty looking foregrounds. I normally do the drawing using a 3b or softer pencil and then gently lift some of the pencil marks off with a soft putty rubber before applying paint. What is the preffered method of drawing ?
