I bought a whole load of water colour pencils a few weeks ago from someone on this site, complete in a nice carry bag. I didnt really know what I was letting myself in for as I had only heard of the blooming things a few weeks before! Anyway, I watched a few yoochoob vids and when the pencils arrived started drawing.
I must say I LOVE them. It's a medium I felt immediately at home with - not to say that I am good, but just that I enjoy the creative experience. Then to go over with water, smooth it out and fix it all...it's just such fun! I find it also triggers my eye - just this morning I was driving out and caught a glimpse of the yellow rape pop up above the road ahead, then it vanished again. I thought, aye aye, thats an image worth painting...if I can. So I got back, made a few sketches to see whether I could do it and have now popped a nice colourful image in my sketch book. I think its good. It is in the book we are using for the sketch book challenge though, so I dont want to post it just yet or it might ruin Sylvia's surprise / shock!
Anyway, thats my post really, just to say what fun these pencils are.

Brilliant! Nothing like finding a new medium, and then taking to it like a duck to water(colour). And the great thing is, there are so many more - even though I've been painting for as long as or longer than some on POL have been alive, there are still media I've not yet tried. I hope to experience the eureka moment you've had with your pencils.

I am a bit of a nutter over pencils ,,I have used lots in my time ,some leave to much lead on paper., others are to light ...and sometimes I like to erase intrusive lines after I have painted a watercolour .thats impossible with some even on bockingford .(that erases pencil lines easily) .I was given a pencil by a friend A2b and It was just right for me and became my favourite .becoming a stubble .
I searched on the art materials sites with no luck .so decided to chance e bay .I was surprised at the hundreds of different pencils for sale.
and not expensive . pastil pencils and so on . I imagine they will be good of fine work ,any way I found my my favourite lead pencils
Koh_I_noor any other painters here have their favourites

What, black graphite pencils Alan? I used to like the old Rowney Black Beauty pencils, in the hexagonal case. And now I like either the Faber and Staedtler clutch pencils, or the Mars Lumograph - the 8B especially, which is beautifully waxy and doesn't give that high shine you used to get with very soft pencils.
Numerous brands of coloured and watercolour pencils, but the thing to remember with them is not to buy cheap ones - they're incredibly frustrating: Derwent is the brand I normally use, but there are many others of high quality available now, a bit expensive but worth it.
Anyone know if the Black Beauty pencils are still available? I've still got a box of them - good thick leads, ideal for landscape sketching.

David, I would just like to draw your attention to an issue of the L.P, (read you had a few years worth in another thread)
When rummaging through the back of the shed I came across a few L.P's from 2014, in the May issue of that year is an article by, Jean Canter on using watercolour pencils.
I'm sure you will find many artists using these pencils, as you browse through the many issues but I hope this will keep your interest in this medium for now.
