Thea - 2009-02-14 6:39 PM I saw a demo on TV by Fiona Peart using Derwent Coloursoft pencils. I decided to buy some and they arrived today. I've had a go, but couldn't emulate anything near what the demo showed. Has anyone tried them and if so, do they have anything on their gallery done in this medium that I could have a look at. I struggled with getting the blocks of colour. I ended up doing sort of colouring like I used to at school! Not very inspiring. Help!Hi Thea, Any medium need to be applied again and again to learn how to tackle them. Even pencils. You need to try them on different surface with the same subject. Example : A cherry - it is small and you can try different methods of applying. There is a colour pencil society. They explain the way to apply the colours. Try to find it with google. A good paper to work with is a Hot pressed paper or cartridge.

I sent a reply last night but it seems to have got lost somewhere! I've just put a picture on my gallery under 'Pencils' of a 'Strawberry Sundae' which I've done in Coloursoft. My first attempt after Derwent told me they were similar to their 'Drawing Pencils' which are superb but are only available in 'brown' shades - I managed to buy a box of Coloursoft cheap on Ebay!

I've now put a picture on the gallery which I did using Derwent Drawing pencils.
I use photos/picture for reference and work in the same way as I do with pastels - no initial drawing and start at a certain point and work out from there, keeping the pressure light to start with then gradually build it up. One of thos battery-erasers is handy to, as you can be more precise if you do make a mistake, plus a piece of paper to rest your hand on to prevent smudging.

I'm new in this forum but not new to the Gallery. I have tried the Coloursoft Pencils and enjoy using them. Granmum has explained quite well how they are used. I have bought a couple of books which are helpful and I am forwarding their titles: Coloured Pencil Portraits by Ann Kullberg; Creating Radiant flowers in Coloured Pencil by Gary Greene; and Colored Pencil Solution Book by Janie Gildow & Barbara Benedetti Newton.

Since reading an article about conditioning brushes that I had totally forgot about doing, I decided I would condition all my brushes yesterday, some I have had for almost 20 years that are still good brushes.
I gently manipulated the sable in the palm of my hand with some conditioner, in this case some conditioner made especially for Alpaca hair. I thought if it didn't work I can always use my own hair shampoo.
You should have seen the colour come out of a couple of flats I have, I was amazed because I honestly thought they were well rinsed and clean!
Good job I don't use them with acrylic paints eh?
