I was about to follow another thread which started off discussing Ivory Black and then I thought I would start a new one reserved to discussions about how different watercolourists work.
I guess we all agree that it’s a case of ‘to hell with the rules’ - it's what suits you best that matters and, for me, I work, not rigidly but generally, as follows:
Greens - I often use ready made greens but always knock them back a bit with, for example, burnt sienna ultramarine etc.
White - acrylic white ink occasionally but that’s as far as it goes.
Paynes Grey - love it for mixing some lovely dark greens for shadowed foliage etc - also good for skies (English ones that is!! ) - I don’t see it as a dull colour but rather a very useful one.
Masking Fluid - hate it and never use it - I can always paint round areas I want to keep white.
Layering - I avoid layering washes - if I don't get it right with the first wash then the picture is abandoned or cropped or whatever! I like a painting to sparkle with areas of unpainted paper and you don't easily get that when layering.
Black - Yes I use it often - its made so why not. I also love pen (or rather stick) and wash - same thing really.
Paper - Nothing less than 200lbs and no need to stretch - I just want to paint. Another advantage of using heavy weight is that don’t have to attach the paper to the board - as a result I can turn it easily - a great help when playing around with washes.
Run out of thoughts - how do others work?
