Well, perhaps unwisely, my first use of the Schminke tubes was a portrait...new paint, new subject. Hmmm. Anyway, the colours are much more vivid that I was getting with my St Petersburg pans, but thats quite likely a function of tubes Vs pans anyway. Eitherway, the picture is a lot more vibrant so I'm impressed with and by the Schminke paints although they are more expensive than my St Peters pans. I have also received some heavy paper for Christmas and this portrait was done on nice Hot Pressed 300lb stuff. Might have wasted a sheet of it...but now I know that I love painting on quality paper. When I try to compare it to the cheap practice paper I bought 50 sheets of from KB there is nothing to compare: one is horrible to work on and one is a delight. I know some will say but Cotman colours and cheap paper are easily capable of making good results...it's the artist that counts. I agree with this whole heartedly, but I do this for fun and I get more fun from these materials! I know this because I have tried both. I don't suppose I will try another portrait for a while, but I might have a bash with pencils, as my drawing skills really aren't up to it yet but this one was enjoyable. D

Cheap and nasty materials are a pain to work with, so while it's true that many a good painting has been made with the most unpromising surfaces and paints - though not with rubbish brushes - that's only because in individual cases artists have managed to triumph over adversity. Think of the thousands of occasions when the sheer tackiness of cheap paints and paper that curls around your hand if you so much as look at it have ruined a potential success and put people off ever trying to paint again. The poor workman always blames his tools stuff is nonsense - coined to excuse employers who wouldn't provide proper tools to their workers (strains of The People's Flag is Deepest Red might be coming towards you at this point....).
