A friend asked me to conduct fortnightly tutorials with her local art group we have just completed two weeks on Watercolour and now I propose tackling Line and Wash. That brought Rowland Hilder to mind. He's rather neglected these days but I find him a more interesting painter than Edward Wesson because he exploited brush drawn line and opaque white in his watercolours. Incidentally I prefer Wesson's watercolours that exploit ink line - probably done with a matchstick - to his trademark free washy ones Hilder was a master of line and wash the illustration is a copy from page 70 of his book 'Sketching Country.
