Hang on Studio Wall

Hi folks, Thought some of you might be interested to see the beautiful work of a really fast and loose watercolour painter. He does the most amazing paintings. If you follow the link then scroll down to the Watercolor Demo 2; have a look at his lifting techniques. I know he's painting incredibly wet into wet but even so, I can't quite work out how he is able to lift the paint out so cleanly. Is it a hard sized paper? Which ones are hard sized - presumably not a rag paper but otherwise how can you tell prior to buying it which paper will repel paint more than others? Has he put a thin layer of gesso on the surface or has he mixed the paint with gum arabic (which I've never got the hang of)? I'd love to be able to use lifting to achieve such an effective highlight. Any ideas? Maybe he's just really clever and uses bog standard paper, but anyway I think it's really interesting to try to paint watercolour on different surfaces because the effects can be spectacular. I look forward to being illuminated! http://fcembranelli.blogspot.com/
