I read this quote the other day and it got me thinking: "My motto has always been to keep it simple:a few colours,a paintbrush and a surface to work on" Candida Alvarez.A fantastic quote I'm sure you will agree but more importantly one that we should all bear in mind especially in this day and age where it can be very easy to get bogged down with the huge array of equipment and painting aids that we as artists now have at our disposal. What we need to remember every now and then is that some of the finest pieces of art known were painted long before any of this equipment was available. So with this in mind here is your challenge: For one week go completely back to basics, use a basic pallette of colours (no more than six), one or two of your favourite brushes (no more), some watercolour paper and nothing else. A great many artists I know that have done this before have been slightly shocked when they realised just how much they had started to depend on their equipment as a crutch. Employing this challenge regularly will help ensure that it is your painting technique that improves and not your reliance on your equipment.Have fun!!
