In the Sept. LP magazine Jem bowden has painted his interpretation of a photograph which features a lovely old ivy clothed tree at the side of a leafy lane. Before the publication of the mag. i painted my interpretation in which i painted the character of the old tree and did not see the lane as having a very steep crosswise slope. the artist stripped the tree of its ivy and to me it was not giving the tree the prominence it deserved . I found his painting very slick and sketchy and pretty unattractive and not a great example to follow if learning watercolour. My effort was on the gallery recently and you can compare them for interpretation and composition.by amateur and professional....Syd

Well I love Jem's work and this painting is no exception but I must admit that, in my humble opinion, he didn't captured the incline very well - it looks to be over-exaggerated compared to the photo and when I first saw it I wanted to turn the magazine at an angle to straighten it up.
I just checked in LP and I see what you mean. Is this what's called poetic licence????
Could be poetic licence Margaret but I would hate to walk along the path - bit like walking on the side of a mountain and having just checked in the mirror I can confirm that I'm not a goat.
Lol, thank goodness for that!
Don't get that mag, so missed it. Wd be interested seeing it
I don't very often get Leisure Painter (I know, I know, sorry Ingrid!) - could we see the picture or have a link to it? http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
A scan from LP
I had a look at your painting, Syd, and it seemed ok to me. This one however: you need one leg longer than the other to WALK overthere and hope it didn't rain the day before or you will never get to the end (lol) http://www.painters-online.co.uk/artist/MiaKetels
Sheesh - well, they're going to be in trouble when it rains and the waters drain from the field on the right: it looks like a landslip in progress; living right next to one, and in an area of hills, troughs and valleys, I've never yet seen a path with as steep an incline as that. Far be it from me to criticize, but Jem Lad - are you sure? http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
