I`ve come back to painting as a medium after many years and was a bit startled to be told at a class that it was normal to trace the outline first.
Now - I can see the benefits of this and have nothing against it, but I use the initial drawing process to explore and understand the structure of the subject first. I find it brings up all sorts of unexpected points - what to leave out, what to emphasise, where the light is etc. Another tutor told me she draws first - but on another piece of paper, then does a light sketch on the w/c paper.
I was interested to know what other people do.
